Munich 2023

As Berlin-based architects, we would like to present with our design of the Edition N°139 in Munich a concept that reflects the habitus of our home city. Berlin is a modern city that is noticeably characterised by its political history. The Second World War and the subsequent division of Berlin have given it its unique urban and social diversity: a young metropolis where the rough and the improvised are as much part of its DNA as cosmopolitan polish.

Our design concept for this loft apartment is based on this dynamic urban diversity and rough style of Germany’s capital. The long, low windowsill below the sloping roof is a key design element which emphasises the length and the openness of the space. Its colourful slabs of natural stone bonded with aluminium sandwich panels provide a rough counterpoint to the soft warmth of neutral white walls and the whitewashed oak parquet. Enclosed surfaces in the core of the apartment offer users generous storage space. Semi-transparent curtains afford privacy options to divide the space and the sleeping area. The apartment’s spatial elements are connected by a light strip along the ceiling.

The entire space combines a cosy atmosphere whose classic aesthetics are contrasted by the use of raw materials.
